boy oh boy

since my return from four years of school in the USA, i sometimes i have these stark "crazy! this would never happen in the states!" moments.
today i had one while listening to cbc.

the ontario attorney general was being interviewed and he said that he is lobbying the federal government to institute a complete ban on handguns throughout canada. there were 4 deaths and 8 serious injuries due to handguns in a 24 hour period in toronto alone last weekend.

and i thought, "this would never be an issue up for discussion in the states! especially not when the nra makes sure that people can still own semi-automatics."

canada, how i love thee right now.

Sure, the US Attorney General (Alberto Gonzales) may not be lobbying the federal government to institute a ban on handguns in the States, but that does not negate the fact that there has been continual lobbying of the US government to ban handguns throughout the years.

interesting story in favor of handguns that i heard since moving to lynden...

a while ago (as in the past 6-7 months) an off-duty mailman was driving around and he saw a lady being attacked by a couple of dogs. he chased the dogs away and the lady thanked him. just a little later he saw the same dogs attacking the lady again, and this was a pretty serious dog attack we are talking about here, so this off-duty mailman took out his handgun, which he can carry legally apparently, and shot one of the dogs. bam. dead. on the spot. and he saved this ladies life.

true story. in lynden. when i heard that story i felt like i was in the old west.

Chris makes a good point about continuing lobbying for outlawing handguns, but with the NRA acting as the richest and most powerful lobbying organization in the US, I doubt anything will happen soon. And after watching the original "Dawn of the Dead" last night, I'm not sure handguns should be outlawed.

did you see any of the Demcratic YouTube debate on CNN? Gun control definitely came up. I think some of those candidates would definitely be for a total ban on guns, but they know that's not likely ever going to happen. Still, Automatic weapons America? Come on, we don't need those. And the semi-automatic weapons, too. Good boy, now run along and play with your hand gun.

I don't see a complete ban on guns happening, and in some ways I don't think it should happen either in Canada or in the US - did I just say that? living in the states for too long. - but a partial ban and much stricter restrictions on guns is necessary, and I think someday in the US it will happen (probably reveresed the next election though). *cynical smirk*
